I am very glad indeed to have an opportunity to write a few words about the nearing to a close, second edition of the Ala has a pen typography workshop.The entire project originated from a need for bridging a gap in the Polish education system. Few people have designed the applied type- faces in Poland. The multiple attempts to design individual letters, sets of characters or even full alphabets in the typographic studios, were not digitized or circulated. The results of these experimental works could only be used in titles, usually as a single element, just an accent in the artistic composition. In the recent years the situation has changed, nevertheless, typeface design is neglected in the curricula of art acade- mies. The exceptions to this standard are very few.

Pied Piper set covers portraits of folk players who play at polish folk trance (flying) parties. It is worth noticing that old aged villagers play / teach traditional polish tunes using vintage instruments “as in the auld days”. The audience at the party is city students in their twenties. It is worth noticing that partying happens to great enjoyment of both. A friend of mine, who is a photographer actively participates in those flying trance parties, was the one who introduced me to this grass roots movement, hence the drawings.
